VITA Quality Reviewer
Major Duties: The Quality Reviewer serves as the technical tax expert for a tax site and is responsible for ensuring that returns prepared meet the quality requirements of the IRS VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program. Quality Reviewers review completed tax returns, correct errors, and provide substantive tax knowledge and guidance to volunteer preparers. Quality Reviewers also assists the Site Coordinator in ensuring the efficient operation of the tax site.
Availability: Candidates should be available to work in-person one or more three to five hour shift per week during the following times: weekday evenings, Saturday mornings, Saturday afternoons, or Sunday afternoons, from late January through late-April. Additional hours during the week may be required at some sites to oversee the e-file process. Quality Reviewers are needed at several of our sites in Washington, DC; Oxon Hill, MD and Rockville, MD. Quality Reviewers will attend approximately 16 hours of mandatory training offered at flexible times in December and January.
Skills and Experience:
  • Two-years experience conducing quality review as a VITA/AARP certified volunteer; or three years experience preparing taxes as a VITA/AARP volunteer with Advanced certification.
    OR Two years substantial experience preparing individual tax returns for low-income tax filers as a registered return preparer, enrolled agent, CPA.
  • Must be self-directed, detail oriented and organized, able to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment and have reliable transportation.
  • Must complete Community Tax Aid training for returning preparers and quality reviewers and afterwards to pass the IRS volunteer certification test at the advanced level.
Desired Qualifications: Previous experience with volunteer low-income tax assistance programs. Fluency in Spanish, Amharic or another language commonly spoken by immigrants living in the metropolitan Washington, DC region. Please indicate fluency in languages other then English in your cover letter.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Manage and ensure return preparation quality at tax site
  • Follow Community Tax Aid (CTA) and IRS site procedures.
  • Support Site Coordinator with operational needs of the site. Help manage workflow, facilitate sign-in and intake of clients; ensure orderly and thorough screening process.
  • Provide on-site tax expertise; answer tax volunteers’ preparation questions and assist with any tax-related issues.
  • Ensure that completed tax returns are reviewed for completeness and accuracy.
  • Work with individual responsible for electronically filing returns to ensure procedures are followed and problems in rejected returns are corrected on a timely basis.
  • Ensure security of confidential information.
  • Ensure proper reporting and record keeping.
  • Maintain a safe and welcoming space for taxpayer and volunteers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Classification:  Non-Exempt Temporary/Seasonal.

Hourly Rate:  $28-$40/hour dependent on experience and language ability

Time Frame: Position runs from late January through mid April, with some training hours during December and/or January.
